Meet The Not-Gary J Buseys Behind @GaryJBusey (2/2)
His name is @GaryJBusey and his Twitter account isn’t verified.
@GaryJBusey was started in 2009 by four commenters on the movie blog FilmDrunk. A love for crude humor brought the “Filmdrunkards” together, says contributor Paul Casillas. Since then, @GaryJBusey has become a Twitter phenomenon. Busey has more than 74,000 followers. Last year, PC World named “him” the sixth funniest person on Twitter.
The four Busey masterminds have never met in person. Although they each tweet from different states, their tweets are universally hilarious. The Filmdrunkards go by BK (the lone female), Donkey Hodey, Paul Casillas, and Jacktion! They recently agreed to an exclusive email interview with Handshake. Except for Casillas, the contributors only agreed to be interviewed under their Internet handles (they are impersonating Gary J. Busey, after all).
Gird your loins.
Handshake: Did you ever expect to have more than 70,000 followers?
Jacktion!: I don’t know what I expected, honestly. I knew that we were funny when we started this up, but I never realized how big it was going to become. It would be nice if we could get more followers than some of the vapid whores who have nothing to add to anyone’s lives. We may be doing nothing? constructive, but we’re just trying to bring a little bit of laughter into people’s lives.
Donkey: I wouldn’t say 70,000+ followers is surprising, but I know for sure that I didn’t start out thinking about that until the page really gained momentum. Now it’s just kind of fun to watch the follower count. I tell jokes to make myself laugh, if people laugh with me then it’s even better.
H: Less than a year ago, Mark Sullivan of PC World called @GaryJBusey the sixth funniest person on Twitter, ahead of John Hodgman. What do you make of this?
Jacktion!: Let me start off by saying I’m a huge fan of John Hodgman, so it’s quite an honor to be mentioned alongside of him. Twitter, with its character limit, is the perfect place to make jokes. It’s nice to know that people think we’re using it effectively.
Pauly: I was happy to find out that we were even on that list. It made me want to print it out and slap my Mom with the paper. But, at the end of the day, it’s just a fake Gary Busey account.
Donkey: I think it’s great that one person called us funnier than John Hodgman, as I have a lot of respect for him; I’ve always thought that for a good portion of us which run all of these Twitter accounts (in which I am involved relatively little), that if we were properly organized, motivated, and especially paid, we’d be able to rival just about any comedy show or website. The kind of stuff that Daniel Tosh is saying on his show is pretty comparable to the things we regularly come up with, except we don’t have to worry about censors.
