Explosions, suicide by explosion, and maddening pre-explosion whispers in the excellent season finale for AMC’s The Walking Dead, “TS-19”

Scientists have proven that massive explosions are by far the greatest way to end anything, especially pie-eating contests, but also the premiere seasons of zombie TV shows.

Last night’s season finale of The Walking Dead not only took this lesson to heart — ending with a thoroughly satisfying and god-damn big fireball — but also included enough character drama and plot revelations to keep you enthralled throughout.

It was the episode with the fewest zombie kills and the fewest zombies. Not surprisingly, it was the best episode to date.

My thoughts exactly. Through I was a little disappointed in the explosion. Maybe I’m missing something, but they seemed waaay too close to that fireball to drive away unscathed. I also didn’t care if Andrea went up in flames, but I’m glad Dale didn’t. Jacqui didn’t seem like a quitter to me either.

Not knowing what Jenner whispered to Rick is still bothering me, so I hope season two primers before next Halloween. I also really really want to know what happened to the guy and his son who saved Rick in the first episode.

Thanks for the recaps. Loved the rating system. Can’t wait until the next season.

Breaking Bad rerun marathon kicks off this Wednesday

Written by

Comments: --

When season 3 of Breaking Bad ended in a massive cliffhanger, fans became overwhelmingly distraught at the prospect of waiting an entire year for a new season. Now AMC is re-airing Mr. White’s entire descent into villainy so far in 2 back-to-back episodes every Wednesday from Dec. 6 to March 11, 2011.

The station’s definitely trying to keep the buzz alive until the fourth — and for our and creator Vince Gilligan’s sake final — season.

I don’t care what you say, I STILL don’t think Crowley’s dead. They couldn’t just kill off my bb like that. :/ That’s cold.

Inception in (near) real-time

If you haven’t seen Christopher Nolan’s brilliant film Inception, don’t watch the above video — It’s a film that is better unspoiled. But if you did see it and you came away a little confused, this video might help. YouTuber Weikang Sun has edited the film so that each level plays at roughly the speed of the corresponding levels. The resulting re-edit shows just what a braided, twisting masterpiece Nolan and company created.

Inception is out on DVD now. And while we’re talking Inception, check our own Fernando Alfonso III’s take on the film.

The candid Stephen Colbert

Written by

Comments: --

So earlier this year, the good folks at reddit helped raise money for the DonorsChoose rally. Stephen Colbert promised to chat with them and answer some questions if they reached a certain amount. They did. So he talked.

Most Colbert fans know that, behind the character he plays on The Colbert Report, Stephen is an intelligent, insightful and often fascinating man. Of course, he’s also funny. Funny and intellectual go a long way toward helping folks become more informed – it’s easier to digest facts with a dose of humor, which probably goes a long way toward Colbert’s popularity.

The casual interview on reddit features the man behind the character, and contains some great stuff like:

Gizmodo: NASA to announce a new kind of lifeform — but one that lives on planet Earth, not Titan

Written by

Comments: --

Gizmodo’s Jesus Diaz, citing a Dutch media outlet, claims that today’s much-hyped NASA press conference will indeed announce the discovery of a new form of life — but not extraterrestrial life.

At their conference today, NASA scientist Felisa Wolfe Simon will announce that they have found a bacteria whose DNA is completely alien to what we know today. Instead of using phosphorus, the bacteria uses arsenic. All life on Earth is made of six components: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur. Every being, from the smallest amoeba to the largest whale, share the same life stream. Our DNA blocks are all the same.

But not this one. This one is completely different. Discovered in the poisonous Mono Lake, California, this bacteria is made of arsenic, something that was thought to be completely impossible.

Fan-made music video for “Shop-Vac” teems with awesome kinetic typography

Who knew a music video could top the great kinetic typography for Ceelo’s “Fuck You”. Well, graphic artist Jarett Heather‘s fan vid for software engineer-turned indie artist Jonathon Coulton‘s song “Shop-Vac” has now taken up that mantle.

The animation deserves every praise for representing every possible action in the song’s lyrics and running with the song’s playful anti-consumerist message by picking apart commercial logos and signs.

Skate 3: Realistic Adventures

Written by

Comments: --

YouTubers ABadFeeling’s Skate 3 video is an excellent example of realism in video games. Gone are the 2 minute grinds, the 1000 feet manuals, and the insane drop-ins. Instead the video highlights those tricks the average person might conceivably master after months of hard work. The final result is a perfect mix of minor achievements and hilarious failures. The fall at 1:42 is a moment that would make even the great Leeroy Jenkins proud.

Check out ABadFeeling’s YouTube channel for more seriously great gamer videos.
