Lackluster filler episode does little to push Supernatural Season 6 plot forward

Written by

Comments: --

Following a lead from their new boss Crowley, the Winchester brothers attempt to hunt down and capture the werewolf alpha. They come nowhere close to finding it, instead stumbling on a pack of skin-walkers, a monster more appropriate to a show like True Blood. Is that what Supernatural is shooting for now? Hope not…

The Walking Dead — Season 1 Episode 3 — “Tell It To The Frogs” — recap

Written by

Comments: --

For this week I’m eschewing the straight recap I’ve done earlier for “Romero Points,” a system that awards or takes away points certain scenes in the episode. A positive score is the degree to which George Romero would approve, and a negative score indicates the number of times he would roll over in his grave, if he had one, because he’s very much alive and also who knows whether or not he even plans to be cremated, or if there would be room in his grave to roll, or even if he will ever die (note: this not the real George Romero’s opinion, because I have no idea what he thinks. Rather, it is the one who lives in my head and tells me every night that I’m the “best little zombie fan ever”).

Here we go:

A fruit fly maggot’s body is covered in eyes (and other fruit fly goodness)

Written by

Comments: --

Maggots are covered by surprises — in the form of eyes.

Researches at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Center for Developmental Genetics were surprised to discover that nearly every segment of a fruit fly larva contains light-sensitive cells. The fly probably evolved this feature as a response to the need to avoid sunlight. The larvae must burrow deep into their chosen fruit, where they live off yeast. Too close to the fruit’s surface and not only do they run out of yeasty goodness, but they also get shriveled up by the sun and the elements.

A life told through Facebook

Written by

Comments: --

It’s strange to think how much of our lives will be archived through Facebook. This little film by Maxime Luère demonstrates just how available the history of our relationships will be to the next generation.

Today the letters of famous people are collected into books to provide an insight into their personal lives. Will future generations collect the Facebook posts of their icons? Will we read how our great leader’s ethos can best be illustrated by this post she made as a young teenager, “Robot revolution in HerpDerpistan, lol, that’s nuts! and Bolts! Viva la Tin Men!”

New Tron: Legacy trailer

Written by

Comments: --

The newest trailer for Tron: Legacy doesn’t introduce that much new, except for four sultry female Programs who strip Users of their clothes with lasers that shoot out of their fingers.

Only Hollywood could — or would even attempt to — first create laser fingers and then to sexualize them.

But, whatever. This is still the third trailer in a row to give me goosebumps and/or cause me to let out a slow, loud groan of delight.

More Tron: Legacy trailers:

This robot sucks at giving a sponge bath

Okay, I freely admit that I am no expert on either giving or receiving sponge baths. But even I can say definitively that this robot is years away from challenging the sponge bath pros.

Minecraft now supports simple texture swapping

Written by

Zelda fans, Mario fans, fans of seasons and creepers and Nintendo Game Boy graphics rejoice: Minecraft now supports simple texture swapping. Markus Persson, the game’s creator, announced new features on his blog on Tuesday. And today, the ability to re-skin the game is available to everyone who updates. (Whoa, Bonus: Hitting F4 spawns a portal.)

Previously, the process of changing the look of Minecraft involved downloading textures, uncompressing files, and moving them into adjacent folders. But now it couldn’t be simpler (or kinda the same): Snag the update, grab a texture pack (in .zip form), drop it into the newly-created “texturepacks” folder, hit that fancy new “Mods and Texture Packs” button on the start screen, load the texture packs from the folder, and choose your pack. (Note: You’ll have to make sure all the main folders and .pngs are on the root level of the texture pack, not in any folder. Just zip up the contents. It should look like this before you select it all and zip it up.)

In response to Persson’s update, Handshake has compiled a list of our 5 favorite textures and provided links so you can immediately begin re-discovering Minecraft.

Check them out below:

A Love Letter to Syracuse — Steve Powers

Written by

Comments: --

Steve Powers’ street art project, “A Love Letter to Syracuse,” has been up for a couple of months now. But this is the first time I’ve seen this excellent video of the project.

We at Handshake have more than a middling connection with the Salt City, and it’s great to hear how so few of the residents on the West Side — the poorest part of the city — found anything to dislike about their hometown.

For those unfamiliar with the project, the original press release is copied after the jump.
